Ancillary Services are services required to support the energy market but which are not traded as part of the energy market.

System Management are required to procure adequate quantities of these services, either from Electricity Generation Corporation (Verve Energy) resources (the default option) or on a contestable basis from independent providers.

In respect of Dispatch Support Services, which are a category of Ancillary Services that presently only Verve Energy is able to supply, the Wholesale Electricity Market Rules (clause 3.11.8B) require System Management to obtain the approval of the Authority before entering into a contract for Dispatch Support Services.

The Authority (clause 3.11.8C) will review whether the proposed contract would achieve the lowest practicably sustainable cost of delivering the Dispatch Support Service.
